Operating within an imposing historic building crowned by a statue of Pallas Athena, the Maverick Athenaeum Hostel has become a new kind of meeting point for culture and community life in downtown Budapest. As the largest unit in the network to date, it offers more spacious and diverse communal areas while preserving the building’s distinctive historical atmosphere.
Integrating the iconic architectural heritage into a contemporary hostel concept presented a complex design challenge. The central space, originally functioning as an inner courtyard, had already been transformed during an earlier renovation with a full-span glass skylight, creating an atrium-like communal area flooded with natural light.
The preservation and reinterpretation of both the incoming natural light and the original courtyard vegetation became defining elements of the landscape design concept. An integrated bookshelf system referencing the building’s former role as the Athenaeum printing house adds a cultural layer to the space while also defining the framework for communal use.
The spiral staircase within the atrium, together with the reception desk’s fractured geometry reminiscent of a tree trunk, creates an organic yet striking spatial experience woven together with the surrounding vegetation.
The floors connected by the iconic staircase primarily accommodate bunk-bed dormitories, complemented by double rooms. The material palette, along with the floating light and mesh installation appearing throughout the corridors, integrates seamlessly into the overall concept.
